The Middletown Board of Education seeks dynamic and effective leaders as candidates for its Superintendent of Schools position.
About the Middletown School District
The Middletown School District educates approximately 4300 students, ages pre-kindergarten through grade 12, and provides continuing education for adults. The District consists of eight elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Middletown offers exemplary student educational offerings that include early childhood programs at the elementary schools; career pathways at the middle school; a Regional Agricultural Science and Technology Center at the high school; a transition program for students age 18-22; and, a vibrant adult education program.
The District's mission statement of Cultivating the Brilliance in Each Student is evident across all schools. The District operations and daily work are informed by the mission, core values, and a clear set of Foundational Frameworks designed to prepare all graduates as globally-minded, well-rounded individuals ready to thrive in the 21st century. The District encourages active family and community partnerships in the educational journey and its dedicated and talented staff work together to create inclusive, innovative learning environments for all students.
The Middletown Board of Education consists of nine (9) members elected by voters residing within the district’s boundaries. Board Members serve four-year terms without pay. While candidates run for a vacant position associated historically with one of the two political parties (i.e., Democrat or Republican), members do not represent specific groups; rather, each represents Middletown Public Schools at-large.
About the Middletown Community
As suggested by the name, Middletown is a vibrant community located in the center of Connecticut along the Connecticut River. As part of Middlesex County, Middletown has the unique claim of offering a lovely mix of suburban, urban, and rural settings for its families. With a population of approximately 47,000, Middletown celebrates a diverse community who enjoy the town’s beautiful parks, nature trails, and recreation spots along the Connecticut River, as well as a downtown Main Street showcasing many international restaurants, shops, and entertainment. Many families in Middletown work nearby at RTX (Pratt & Whitney), FedEx, Middlesex and Connecticut Valley Hospital, CT State Middlesex Community College and Wesleyan University and enjoy their quick access to several major highways. Middletown is a highly sought after community for families and business stakeholders, who hold a great deal of pride in their city.
About the Position
The Board seeks a strong educational leader with a demonstrated record of attaining results in student achievement. Demonstrated competency in the following areas is of importance to the Middletown Board of Education:
Strong communicator, decisive decision maker, and effective delegator
A builder of trust and capacity throughout the school community
Expertise in the areas of teaching and learning
Understands the importance of balance when considering the needs of students and limits of finances
Working cooperatively with the Board of Education, the superintendent will:
Project a vision that strengthens the academic experience for all students
Focus on the ongoing improvement of student achievement
Promote a district-wide safe climate and culture that allows students to flourish and to grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially
The Middletown Search Committee is in the process of engaging its stakeholders in a comprehensive needs assessment survey and focus groups that will help prioritize the qualities, characteristics, skills, and experiences most desired in its next superintendent. Meanwhile, the search committee seeks to raise interest and thoughtful consideration among potential applicants. Please consider this special opportunity to serve as Superintendent of Schools.
Connecticut Superintendent certification (093) or immediate eligibility for such is required. The projected salary package for the position is $225,000-$250,000, depending on the qualifications and experiences of the successful candidate.
