FCC Application Window for E-Rate Cybersecurity Pilot Program to Close Nov. 1

On September 17, 2024, the FCC announced the opening of the application window for the E-Rate Cybersecurity Pilot Program. Eligible schools and libraries can apply to participate in the three-year, $200 million pilot program until November 1, 2024. Participants selected for the pilot program will receive support to defray the costs of eligible cybersecurity services and equipment, while providing the FCC with data to better understand whether and how USF could be used to improve school and library defenses against increasing cyberattacks.

Update on USAC and the 5th Circuit Court Case
|
The ongoing legal battles surrounding the FCC and the Universal Service Fund (USF) programs continue to unfold. In June, AASA supported the FCC in the Molak v FCC case, which challenges the FCC's decision to allow E-Rate funds to support Wi-Fi on school buses. In a separate July decision, the 5th Circuit ruled that the USF funding mechanism is unconstitutional, raising concerns about its future. The court granted a stay, allowing programs like E-Rate to continue while the FCC appeals to the Supreme Court. The appeal was filed on October 1, and we're now awaiting a decision on whether the Court will hear the case. Until then, USF programs remain operational. Read more here.

USED Highlights Resources to Support Communities Impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton

USED released a list of technical assistance offerings for K-12 schools impacted by the recent hurricanes to support their recovery efforts and restore teaching and learning environments.

EPA Lead Testing Rule for Schools Finalized
|
The EPA finalized a rule creating the first-ever national requirement to test for lead in schools that rely on water from public utilities. The rule also mandates that water systems screen all elementary and childcare facilities and offer testing for middle and high schools. Read more here.

Join the Discussion! P2C is Bridging Classroom Learning with Real-World Careers
|
Pathway2Career (P2C), an AESA Business Partner, helps students realize what they’re learning in school matters. P2C connects classroom lessons to future jobs, showing how the skills and knowledge students gain today can lead to real-world opportunities. It answers the question, “When will I ever need to know this in the real world?” by helping learners and teachers make daily connections between what they’re doing now in the classroom and what they’ll do later in life.
On Thursday, November 14 at 2:00 pm EST, AESA will host a live Zoom session with Dr. Joseph Goins, P2C CEO. Dr. Goins will share research on the power of aligning curriculum with real-world careers specific to each region, offering practical insights for educators. A Q&A session will follow, with the opportunity to explore strategies for applying these ideas.
