Let's take a closer look at AESA's National Awards

The Excellence in Executive Leadership Award acknowledges contributions through executive leadership in advancing regional educational service agency (ESA) programs at the regional, state, and national levels. Nominees have included past or present educational service agency executives and staff.

 

Criteria for this award:

  1. Advancement of the goals and philosophies of educational service agencies.
  2. Outstanding accomplishments and innovative practices.
  3. Exercise of leadership.
  4. Service to educational service agencies.

This award is in honor of Justus A. Prentice, BOCES Superintendent in New York, who began working with AASA to support an independent organization for ESAs. Portrayed as one of the original founding fathers of AESA, Justus A. Prentice was elected as the first president of AESA's Executive Council.

Federal Advocacy Update

The Kids Off Social Media Act (KOSMA), introduced on May 1, is a bipartisan bill that combines Senator Schatz’s Protecting Kids on Social Media Act and Senator Cruz’s Eyes on the Board Act. This guest post examines what Title II of KOSMA (which incorporates the Eyes on the Board Act of 2024) could mean for schools.  Read the post HERE.

U.S. Department of Education Launches Next Phase of
FAFSA Student Support Strategy  

On May 6, the USED
announced a new multi-million dollar program as part of the FAFSA Student Support Strategy to help school districts, states, and other public and private organizations with efforts to boost FAFSA completion by expanding the availability of advisers, counselors, and other staff to support students during extended hours, facilitating FAFSA submission clinics, and providing communication supports to help communicate with parents and help them complete their forms.

OCR Releases New Guidance on Title VI  
This week, the Biden administration released new OCR guidance to help school leaders navigate what constitutes antisemitic discrimination of students and other Title VI violations. The 20-page “Dear Colleague” letter outlines specific examples of how to apply Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars discrimination based on shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics.

AESA partners with AASA to lead Mental Health in Schools Bill  

Last week was Children's Mental Health Awareness Week (May 5 - 11). AESA partnered with AASA and the National Association of School Psychologists in asking members to advocate for increased access to comprehensive school mental health services. Contact your Senators to support the bipartisan CARE for Student Mental Health Act and address the shortages of school-based mental health professionals. Check out the action center here!

IU1 Partners with Pathway2Careers
to Enhance Educational Opportunities for Students,
Including Those with Disabilities

 

Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1), dedicated to serving the educational needs across southwestern Pennsylvania, is excited to announce a new partnership with Pathway2Careers (P2C). This collaboration aims to significantly enhance educational opportunities by implementing the P2C Career-Connected Learning model tailored to meet the diverse needs of students, particularly those with disabilities.

 

The Career-Connected Learning model provided by P2C includes advanced career
exploration tools, data-driven career guidance systems, and math, all designed to be
accessible and beneficial for students with disabilities. These resources are aimed at

helping students understand their potential and explore various career pathways that
align with their interests and abilities.

 

Dr. Joseph Goins, CEO of P2C, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating,
"Our collaboration with IU1 is a milestone in making education more inclusive and
effective. Together, we are bringing cutting-edge resources and tailored educational
solutions that address the unique needs of all students, especially those with
disabilities. This partnership underscores our commitment to creating pathways that
lead every student to career success and personal fulfillment."


Dr. Don Martin, Executive Director of IU1, highlighted the impact of the partnership,
