Federal Advocacy Updates

FY25 Appropriations Update

Last week, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed its FY25 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) proposal. Congress is now home for August recess and will not return until September. Upon their return, the overall assumption is that both chambers will focus on passing a continuing resolution to fund the government past the September 30 deadline. Our policy analyst Tara Thomas has a breakdown of everything in the Senate bill here.

FCC Releases State by State Info on How Universal Service Fund Impacts States

Education Hazards of Generative AI

The Educational Hazards of Generative AI provides a basic scientific overview of how large-language models (LLMs) work and connects this knowledge to practical implications for educators. This document is intended as a resource for teachers, principals, school district administrators, parents, students, policymakers, and anyone else thinking about using generative AI for educational purposes.

Chronic Absenteeism

FutureEd just released a new report examining how Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee is using detailed, real-time data on chronic absenteeism to build a powerful statewide coalition invested in boosting school attendance. The strategy, launched in 2023, appears to be paying off. For the 2023-24 school year, overall absenteeism is down almost 10 percentage points from its pandemic-related peak in 2021-22. The effort is making particular strides in reducing absenteeism among low-income students.
