Federal Advocacy Updates

Which Trump Administration Actions on Education Are Legal, and Which Ones Aren’t

EducationWeek summarizes the Trump administration's education-related actions and assesses their legality through a review of statutes and court rulings and legal expert opinions. 
 

Many Teacher Training Grants Temporarily Reinstated

Two federal judges recently ordered USED to reinstate teacher preparation grants, with one court’s order covering SEED and TQP awardees in eight states (including Colorado, Illinois, and Maryland) and another court’s order covering NCTR and AACTE members who held SEED, TQP, or TSLIP grants. USED is also enjoined from canceling any additional such grants in the same manner. It is not clear yet what will happen, if anything, with grantees who are not covered by either lawsuit. 
 

It's Still March: IDEA Full Funding Social Media Campaign 

AESA is proud to co-chair the IDEA Full Funding Coalition. As this landmark legislation marks its 50th anniversary, our coalition is dedicated to a yearlong advocacy campaign—one initiative each month—to celebrate its impact and highlight Congress’ ongoing failure to meet its commitment to fund 40% of the additional cost of educating students with special needs.

 

For March, we’ve released a social media kit filled with ready-to-use posts for both personal and organizational accounts. With a variety of options available, you’ll have plenty of content to post daily—or as often as you choose—to help amplify this critical issue.

This report from Education Reform Now (ERN) has published this document enumerating the powers that belong to the Secretary of Education, the President, and Congress, with respect to the agency and its major programs, such as Title I, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and Federal Student Aid (FSA).

 

Reading Comprehension Loses Out in the Classroom

The Hechinger Report examines a recent Scientific Studies of Reading paper showing that classrooms rarely implement evidence-based reading comprehension practices, with instruction remaining largely focused on decoding rather than comprehension.
