AESA Signs Letter in Support of CARE for Student Mental Health Act
|
AESA signed a letter supporting floor amendment 2529 to S. 4638, the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act, urging its inclusion in any Managers Package moving to the floor. This amendment authorizes The CARE for Student Mental Health Act, codifying the Mental Health Services Professionals Demonstration Grant (now the Strengthening the Pipeline of Mental Health Providers Program) and the School-Based Mental Health Services Grant Program (SBMH).

5th Circuit Court Rules Universal Service Fund (Which Covers E-Rate) Unconstitutional
|
On July 24, the 5th Circuit Court handed down its decision in the case Consumers Research et al vs. the FCC, where the plaintiffs argued that using E-rate funds for Wi-Fi on school buses exceeds the FCC’s authority to provide internet access in schools and libraries. Read early coverage on the case here.
What does it mean for E-Rate? It is unclear. AESA Executive Director Joan Wade represents all of our members on the USAC Board of Directors, which oversees E-Rate. Joan is attending an USAC meeting this week and will update our members with more details as they become available. Read more about this development.

FCC approves E-rate expansion to cover Wi-Fi hotspots for students

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will expand its E-rate program to cover the purchase of Wi-Fi hotspots by schools and libraries. AESA and other education groups supported the decision.
