The 2024-25 national nominations must come from the southern, central, and eastern regions. The western region has a bye and will not have a nominee. The states in the western region include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.

AESA Signs Letter in Support of CARE for Student Mental Health Act
|
AESA joined ten other national organizations in a letter to the Senate expressing their support for COPPA 2.0 as included in the bill and continued deep concern for the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) as included in the bill. The Senate passed KOSPA (which incorporates both COPPA 2.0 and KOSA) by a vote of 91-3. The dissenting senators were Sens. Rand Paul, Mike Lee, and Ron Wyden. The bill will move to the House, who is on recess until September. Our team will use the month of August to continue our round of meetings to respond to the drafts the House shares and highlight our remaining asks for their bill (a couple small changes to KOSA). We do not yet have a read on the exact timeline for a vote or what the actual bill text or substitute will be.

AESA Joins EdLiNC Coalition in Expressing Deep Frustration with 5th Circuit E-Rate Decision
|
Last week, the 5th Circuit struck down the funding mechanism for the universal service fund, which includes the E-Rate program. After the decision, EdLiNC sent a letter expressing deep frustrations. We plan to work with FCC Chairwoman Rosenworcel and vow to ensure that E-Rate will continue to provide all students, educators, and library patrons with access to the online world as envisioned by the bipartisan Congressional authors of this program. New Report on Digital Divide
|
The Center for American Progress (CAP) released a new issue brief titled, How States and Districts Can Close the Digital Divide to Increase College and Career Readiness. This brief is the first in an upcoming series focused on policy recommendations to enhance the use of technology in K-12 public schools. Report author Paige Shoemaker DeMio highlights resources states and districts can access to work towards closing the digital divide and presents a case for future policymaking which prioritizes proactively addressing technological advancements to strengthen educational technology. The author explores federal investments from the Every Student Succeeds Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act but ultimately makes clear that long-term, sustained federal investment - including investment in research to predict and prepare for technological advancements - is necessary to adequately equip educators with the resources they need to prepare students for both college and careers.
Both USED and the FCC have reached out and indicated they want to be on- site in schools at the start of the school year.

For E-Rate, if you have a member/district in your state that would be awesome to highlight, please let us know. The Chairwoman wants to be in schools and we’ve connected her to three this week alone. She’s looking for good E-Rate stories, to highlight the importance of the program: Under-connected rural area? District went 1:1? Hotspots- enabled home access? If you have a school who’d be great to highlight, please email Joan at jwade@aesa.us.
